The other day Jen and I were at Texas Roadhouse and I noticed the different sizes of steak cuts on the menu. They went thusly:
8 ounce
11 ounce Hearty Cut
16 ounce "Cowboy" Cut
This got me thinking about what it meant to me to be a cowboy. My conclusion was that I basically think of the proverbial Cowboy as the Midwestern counterpart of the California "Bro!"
Bro's ride waves while Cowbro's ride bulls but both are only interested in how "siiiick" or how "hootin'-hollerin'" (whatever the jargon) the 8 seconds or so the ride was; both subscribe to similar fashion styles including tight jeans, tattered pearl-snap flannel shirts, and belt buckles; both are constantly concerned with being amused and where they're going to get their next big thrill; neither talk about anything of real importance and when you overhear one of their conversations you have no idea what they are talking about anyway; both are consumed in themselves and have egos the size of their raised truck; and apparently both are concerned about the amount of their protein intake (the "Cowboy" Cut of steak vs. the infamous protein shake)!!!
And for the record I am interested in taking NO PART in either schools of thought!
I would like to thank Jen Bloomfield for the inspiration and encouragement to write this post. Thanks also goes to the following websites where the previous photos were obtained, respectively:
